I’m back!

Hey, guys. I know I’ve been gone for a super long time. So, I’ll try to get you up to speed as best as I can.

Well, the initial reason for my absence was that back in the late summer of last year, a large flood came to my area of residence. We were without Internet for a month or so and my in law’s house is going through a remodeling stage. At the time, I also had an overabundance of freelance work to do. Needless to say, vlogging and blogging was put on the back burner.  My Youtube channel hasn’t been updated in forever either. I WILL get on that one day.

But here’s the better news. We have gotten our own place! That’s right! Me, hubby, and his brother have moved into a house. It’s a rental, but you know, baby steps. We had the Internet put in last week. So, I’ll probably be around a lot more.

That is pretty much the short version of what has been happening. I’ve also made a decision. I will finally buckle down and try a hand at writing a novel. Won’t give out too many details about that at the moment. But I will tell you that it is in its infant stages. As in, I am writing character details and such things in my journal. I figured that would be a good place to start.

Well, I guess that’s it for now. I look forward to talking to you guys again.

Oh wait! I got a new puppy!

Her name is Myrtle.

Book Reviews: So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish by Douglas Adams (Book 4 of 5)

Hi all! I know I have been missing in action a lot lately. I’ve taken on more freelance writing, so naturally I’m usually burned out on writing by the end of the day. But I finished the 4th book in the series today, so I’m back with another review! I know I promised you guys a video post, but I’ve been so swamped with writing that I don’t know when that will be. However, I’ll have a lot of beauty reviews to post up soon, so maybe I can try doing one on the webcam.

For those of you that are just joining me on these book reviews, I’m doing something a little different with this book series. Usually, I post a review on Goodreads first and then bring it here. But since I bought the series in one big collection on my Kindle, I thought it would be easier just to write individual reviews of each novel here and just give an overall star rating on Goodreads once I finished the whole thing. You can read the reviews for the first three books herehere, and here. Now, let’s move on to book 4 of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish.

I have to say so far, I really like this one the best. That’s probably because it deals mostly with Arthur Dent’s budding relationship with a lady by the name of Fenchurch. This one deals with some issues from the first book, basically Fenchurch and Arthur feel connected because they are 2 out of the 3 people on Earth that actually know that the Earth had been previously destroyed (and then reassembled). The only thing that is different about this Earth is that all of the dolphins have left for another dimension. Fenchurch and Arthur ban together, fall in love, and go look for the missing dolphins.

Even though I did enjoy this book, the plot was still ridiculous (as the whole serious is) and I found myself being bored at times. I would still give this book a 2/5 stars on Goodreads.

The next part of the collection is actually a short story followed by the final novel. So, I’ll read the short story first, just in case I need to read it to understand the next book. That means you’ll be getting a new review very soon!

Thanks for the Feedback and the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

I would like to thank the few of you who gave me feedback on some questions I had yesterday. Only one of you gave advice about my itchy scalp problem. Shout out to Kimmykimmycocopuff (that is such a cute screenname!) So, I will most likely follow some of that advice and record the results here. We actually don’t have hard water around here, so I’ll be on the look out for that Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo at my local Sally Beauty Supply soon.

As for the video reviews, I actually have a nice handheld video camera. Unfortunately, I must have forgotten to pack the charge cord when I moved annnd my grandmother might have put it up in storage. So, for now, I may be testing the waters with videos with my laptop webcam.

I’m thinking about posting up my first video possibly tomorrow. I didn’t know what to talk about, but then it hit me. A few months back the fiance and I finished up my favorite animated TV series, Daria. This show was a huge part of my life when it aired and still is today. It was his first time seeing it. I thought it would be razor to do a retrospective video together (if I can get him to agree to it). What do you guys think? If not tomorrow, I think that will be the first video. I’m going to try to do a balance of both writing and film. This is going to be a fun experience.

In other news, I want to give a big thank you to those at https://bookidote.wordpress.com/. For nominating me for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award. When I first started this blog, I never thought I would get the amount of recognition that I have been receiving. I really am very appreciative that all you readers out there want to see what I have to say.

Rules are:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.

2. Put the award logo on your blog.

3. Answer the ten questions sent to you.

4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.

5. Nominate ten blogs.

I am guessing that since this is a “sisterhood,” my choices should be ladies. So, here we go!

  1. What are your September favorites ? (books, music, products, etc.)  I never really did the whole “monthly favorite thing.” I just like what I like at any given time. But I can tell you about some wonderful products I bought this month! I recently discovered LUSH and have fallen in love! For those of you that don’t know what LUSH is, it’s a homemade cosmetics store that makes everything by hand and uses natural ingredients. So far I’ve gotten Grease Lightening (an acne fighter), Angels on Bare Skin (a facial cleanser), Eau Roma (facial toner), Imperials (facial moisturizer), and Happy Hippy (body wash). So far I have used Angels on Bare Skin, Grease Lightening, and Imperials. I can’t wait to try the rest!
  2. What is THE ONE BOOK everyone should read at least once in their lives? The Perks of Being A Wallflower. That book really helped me during a dark time.
  3. Where is your favourite place to read ? I used to love to read outside on my college campus. I guess I’m an outdoorsy reader. I like to read in coffee houses too.
  4. How did you come up with your blog name ? I actually took it from lyrics from the Everclear song “Rocket for the Girl.” I thought it summed up how my fiance makes me feel. Look it up and give it a listen! I also met the lead singer of Everclear back in June.
  5. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? I honestly don’t know.
  6. What’s your worst habit? Low self esteem
  7. Out of all the places around the world you’ve been to, what’s your favorite? I haven’t been to many places, so Disney World
  8. What are 3 essentials a blogger must have? Patience, good writing skills, and manners
  9. As a blogger, what do you think we can contribute to the community? A different perspective.
  10. Best comment on your blog so far. I’ll have to comb through them and get back to you on that.

I nominate:

  8. Worst date moment.
  9. What was your first concert?
  10. If you were granted three wishes by the Robin Williams genie, what would they be?

Book Reviews: Douglas Adams’s the Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Book 2 of 5)

Hi guys! I promise I didn’t disappear off the face of the Earth again. Like I’ve said before, I’ve been a bit swamped with my freelance writing and that has been holding my posts up. What may also help bring in more posts is the fact that I just got a new wireless keyboard. The keyboard on my laptop was starting to fade out and I had to click buttons on the on screen keyboard for the longest time! You can imagine how tedious and frustrating this can become after months of it. So, I found a wireless keyboard and mouse (my mouse has completely died on the laptop) combo for just $12.50 on Amazon. Well, my uncle found it for me. He’s so awesome.

Before we get to the review, I will just be updating you on what’s been going on and what you can expect to see sometime soon. I’m still waiting to find out the results of my library exam. For those of you that might not know, I took the exam so I could go work at a library. Fingers crossed. I really want that job!

As for my beauty reviews, once I use up the the Vitamin E and Aloe Vera line for the Body Shop, I am going to do a compare and contrast review. But to be perfectly honest, I have since discovered LUSH and I am in LOVE! There will be LUSH reviews after that.

Now that we’ve got all of that out of the way, let’s get to this book review! Now, let’s move on to book 2 of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

I really do love science fiction. But these books just aren’t doing it for me. Like I said in my previous review, I think it’s because logic and plot take a back seat to humor and absurdity in this series. I tend to like books that are more driven by plot and character development. Something that I can relate to. However, my fiance loves this series because he’s a goofy guy!

However, I have to give the second book props because it did hold my attention a lot longer than the first book did. The antics of the actual Restaurant at the End of the Universe did get me laughing. Although, I don’t know if I could actually eat a cow that wanted to be eaten and could tell me so.

Once the crew actually left the restaurant, I found myself getting bored again though. Towards the end, the crew are separated from one another and I was very upset that Marvin the Paranoid Android (my favorite character) wasn’t mentioned again. I was worried that something might have happened to him. But my fiance assured me that he is in the third book again.

Even though this book was slightly better than the first, I would still rate this book a 2/5 stars on Goodreads.

I will see you guys tomorrow with a special announcement.

Book Reviews: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Book 1 of 5)

I have a feeling I’m going to get a lot of heat for this, but here I go. My fiance stumbled upon the Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy one day while we were cruising Books-a-Million and decided to get it. He is a big fan of the film. I was also intrigued by it because book one is on my 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list. This version of the book (the Ultimate) is all 5 of Douglas Adams’s novels in one, so it saves time and money. So, I resolved to read the large book when he was done. However, not long after he bought it, Amazon was selling it for a mere $3.99. I took the bait.

I will not be giving a Goodreads star rating this time here on WordPress. I would prefer to review each novel individually and then give a star rating of the novel on its own, Since, I have the Ultimate as the book listed on Goodreads, it would take a long time to actually read the whole book and write a REALLY long review. By reading and reviewing each novel individually, it will be less confusing.

This book just did not do it for me. I’ll pause while I wait for people to stop throwing things at me. My fiance loves it, and I can honestly see why. The random type of humor that this book follows would be right up his alley. However, I am an avid lover of science fiction and I really feel that the science fiction aspect of this novel takes a back seat to the humor. I also feel that the plot really takes a back seat to the humor as well.

I will be finishing all 5 books because I have to finish what I started. But I will not be reading the sixth book by a different author. Unless, by the end of it, I really start enjoying the series. I will say this though. I feel like I have a connection with Marvin the Paranoid Android. I would give the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy 2/5 stars.

A little 90s pop culture tidbit for you, Radiohead loved this series so much that they named a song “Paranoid Android,” The music video scarred me for life as a kid, but I love the song. The cartoon is of Swedish creation and is called Robin. I have all of the shorts on my iPod.

A Review of Amanda Sun’s Stor,

Hey guys! I know I haven’t been very regular with my posts, but I’ve been really tired after all my freelance writing. I’ll try to get another post up when I can. In the meantime, here’s a quick book review!

Finally! The last book of the Paper God series! I waited not so patiently to get through my other books, so I could finally find out what happens to Katie, Tomo, and Jun. My overall response? It was okay.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed in this one. Don’t get me wrong, it was in no way bad. It just seemed very bland compared to the first two books Ink and Rain. I mean we do get a monster battle in this one, but everything just ended way too neatly. It reminded me a lot of the disappointment that was Breaking Dawn. Only I preferred this one a lot.

Some of the things I did like about it was we find out the truth about Ishakawa, though I honestly wished he could have told Tomo. I like that we got to learn about Katie’s dad and I like that the ending with Jun was very ambiguous.

But even though Katie and Tomo are searching for ancient treasures almost the whole time, I just felt like their interaction was lacking. You think things would be more interesting when you are trying to save the world. I mean you are dealing with ancient powerful gods and it just seems too easy. Even the romance seemed boring and almost forced. It fact, I found their love to be more believable in the last two books. Overall, kind of a bland ending to the trilogy.

I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads.

I Promise I’m Not Dead and I’m Not For Sale

Heh, I hope you guys like the Stone Temple Pilots reference. I haven’t been blogging these past few days because I took some time off to dedicate to job hunting. I never heard from that company that wanted the second interview, so it is safe to assume that they went with someone else. Bummer.

So far, things are looking up a bit. I did manage to find a few jobs I was qualified for that are in my field. I just applied for them yesterday, so we’ll see. So far, the only one I’ve heard back for is only a part time gig that is a little far, so it may not be worth it. I’m still going to do the phone interview and see if full time is possible.

A few goodies I ordered should be here today, so reviews will be coming soon. I haven’t really tried out the new supplies I bought at Target yet because I haven’t had any reason to wear make up and it is really hot outside. But if you guys remember one of my previous posts, I discovered I had eczema and not rosacea. I’ll be trying out the new face wash, lotion, and ointment soon. My translucent powder and eye shadow primer are almost here and the foundation I picked out of the three is on its way!

I know it seems like I buy a lot of stuff for the sake of beauty, but I actually buy everything in a certain price range and make sure my bills are paid off first. But lately, I have been worried about our financial status. I’m still unemployed and my fiance is at a dead end job, However, he is getting tutoring for his GED and has been working very hard at it. And at least, I’m getting call backs, right?

Despite all that, I still find myself getting depressed at times. I really hope we can get at a better place soon. Especially because my fiance’s dad just informed us that their rent house will be available in a month. His current tenants are moving out. He said he would even lower the price for us (me. my fiance, and his brother). If I can get a job soon, MAYBE we could do it. But right now, it’s just not feasible.

Last night was wonderful though. My fiance and I stayed up and watched a couple of hours worth of Daria. We’re almost done with the series and it’s great to share something that is so near and dear to me with him. We laughed at my hero’s sarcastic wit and cuddled. That show will forever be in my heart as a childhood through adult relic.

Can’t wait to start reviewing again.

A Thrift Store Adventure With Some Reviews Thrown In

Yesterday, the fiance and I decided to go on a one-on-one date. This is something we hadn’t done in a good while. We’ve recently been invited on many double and triple dates with our friends, but sometimes it’s just nice to go out just the two of us. However, this date turned out to be a real drag.

I spent a lot of time in the bathroom trying to make myself look razor (it’s my slang for cool, but I could substitute it for beautiful too). I chose a little black and grey striped dress that stops just past my knees. It’s a little flirty without being revealing. My floral Doc Martens really paired well with the dress

I did something a little different with my eye make-up. I applied the usual mascara with black eyeliner, only this eyeliner had a little glitter in it. I don’t wear it often, but I busted out my silver eye shadow pen from e.l.f. I have to say the results looked pretty razor.

Just as I was about to try out my new bottle of e.l.f.’s mist and set spray, he poked his head into the bathroom and said my eyes looked sexy. I smiled somewhat, usually I would be thrilled with the compliment, but lately the passion in our relationship has fizzled out a bit. I was hoping that this may lead to some cuddles later.

The e.l.f. mist and set spray set is supposed to lock and seal in your make up for the day, but of course I messed it up on my first attempt. I sprayed it way too close to my face and ended up messing up my eyes. Needless to say, I had to redo it. I’ll write a more in depth review on it when I get it right.

I don’t know for sure, but I think most guys may hate it when we wear lipstick. I know my fiance hates it when I make his lips sticky when we kiss. As I was looking in the mirror, I realized I didn’t want to put any color on my lips. My natural lip color would go well with what I did with my make up. Of course, I would need to keep my lips moisturized and nice and glossy.

Recently, I purchased a vegan lip balm from an Etsy shop. I bought it in the flavor “Rose Candy” and I love it! It smells wonderful, feels great, and makes my natural lip shade glossy. Here’s a link to it:Rose Candy Lip Balm. I really want to try the Whiskey Sugar and Whiskey Honey ones next. I think my fiance would really like those.

Once I was all set, we went to our nearest Goodwill store. I love thrift store shopping! You would be amazed at what you could find there. There wasn’t much on clothes there. I only managed to find one skirt. It’s black with lots of white circles stitched in. I liked it. It was very different.

The real deals I found were in the CDs and DVDs. I managed to find:

I have been itching to get the Reality Bites soundtrack. I love the grunge and alternative era of the nineties, Ethan Hawke, and Winona Ryder. I owe tons of Ethan Hawke films and his novels. He’s my biggest actor crush next to Joshua Jackson (Pacey of Dawson’s Creek). Ethan even sings on the soundtrack!

I now owe the movie. I loved it. I want to read the book, but haven’t gotten it yet.

My fiance’s never seen it. So, I’ll introduce it to him once we finish Daria. Can you believe he had never seen Daria? That was a staple of my childhood.

But alas, most of our date consisted of us being separated to look for own items. I was under the impression we were going to do more, but he didn’t want to go to dinner. If I knew we were only going to spend a couple of hours at a thrift store, I probably wouldn’t have gotten all made up because of the hot sun.

Lately, there seems to be no romance and he seems so disinterested in me. I hate to say it but I even hiked up my dress while we were watching Empire Records. Just to get a little attention. Yeah, I felt like Cory.

The First Post Challenge

So, this morning I was nominated by the lovely lady at A Caffeinated Blog to do the First Post Challenge! Thank you so much!

The rules:

  • link your first post
  • name the type of the post
  • explain why this was your first post (reason for writing)
  • nominate fellow bloggers to participate in the challenge

I am just going to copy and paste my first post.

It’s my first post, yay!  I guess I should start with what possessed me to do this and what this blog will be about and what not.  The other day I was sitting with my godmother at the kitchen table when she made the remark that I should make a blog.  Truth be told, I have made several blogs.  Just like millions of other people on this Earth, I never kept up with them.  Quite frankly though, a blog sounded like a good idea; it would keep me on top of my writing and I could shamelessly plug the articles for my job.  But what to write about?

Well, my favorite thing in the world is actually a person. Tee Hee. ^_^   I was also inspired by another blog that I follow called A Diary of Dating (http://howitwassupposedtobe.wordpress.com/).  This wonderfully written blog is about a young woman that has been chronicling her love/dating life in hopes of one day meeting her future husband.  So I got to thinking; Hmmm, I believe I already found mine.  I could write all about our exploits together up till our wedding day and then I could start a whole new blog about our married life and why I had to explain to his mom why I hit him with that frying pan.  I know what you’re thinking now.  Well, what if we break up?  I can always trash this blog and start a new one. ^-^

I’ll probably post up some other things about my life too.  These things will probably include my life as a college student since my graduation comes in May.  Then hopefully, I’ll get into grad school and I can write on that misery.  I write articles for a magazine in my spare time and I’ll post up links to that when I can.  I might even post up some of my own written works.

Now a little bit about myself, I am in a wheelchair with a condition known as Cerebral Palsy.  And yes, it does affect the brain.  But in my case, it only affects the part of my brain that enables me to walk on my own.  I’m a writer, so naturally I’m also English major.  I love 90s alternative and grunge.  I did steal the title of my blog from an Everclear song.

Well that’s all for now.  I know I should have probably started this blog with how I met my future hubby.  But that will come at a later date.  I need to get this blog looking better.  My man will also have to keep me in line on updating this thing as well.

This was actually re-posted from my original blogs on Blogger and Tumblr. But I just couldn’t get the readers I wanted on either site. So, I moved to WordPress and never looked back! It was basically just introducing myself and why I chose t start a blog.

Now I nominate:

A Happy Accident?

Yesterday, in an attempt to do something different, spend time with my fiance, get him away from the video games for a while, and work on cooking skills; I enlisted his help in making “vegan blueberry muffins.” I bought quite a bit of fruit for myself in order to combat the sugar cravings and came to the realization that there was no way I could eat that whole blueberry carton on my own before they would spoil. So, I thought baking muffins for the whole family would be nice, especially by giving them a healthier spin.

Well, I had a lot of blueberries, so I thought that doubling the recipe would be acceptable. Not my best idea. You see, I seem to fine with making meals, but baking has never been my strong suit. You should never double the salt. Needless to say, two teaspoons of salt gave them a somewhat salty flavor. But it was surprisingly still edible. They were kind of like a “sweet and salty” blueberry muffin batch.

My fiance actually loved them and when I woke up this morning there was only five left out of a dozen. Well, at least we can say we crossed a milestone together and produced a somewhat cooking fail.
