Book Reviews: Life, the Universe, and Everything by Douglas Adams (Book 3 of 5)

For those of you that are just joining me on these book reviews, I’m doing something a little different with this book series. Usually, I post a review on Goodreads first and then bring it here. But since I bought the series in one big collection on my Kindle, I thought it would be easier just to write individual reviews of each novel here and just give an overall star rating on Goodreads once I finished the whole thing. You can read the reviews for the first two books here and here Now, let’s move on to book 3 of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I don’t even know what to say about this one. I kind of…oh hell, I hated it. The plot was too confusing, I didn’t get as many laughs, and I’m so glad I only have two more books. I will say that the character of Agrajag did get me laugh. Apparently, Arthur Dent is killed every one of this guy’s reincarnated forms and is out for revenge. Just imagine a fluffy bunny coming after you.

Basically, the plot of this is that Arthur, Ford, Trilian, and Zaphod have to stop a war driven alien race from destroying the universe. Sounds interesting, right? It was a huge let down. A lot of talking and not enough action.

I would give this one a 1/5 star rating on Goodreads.

PS: I think I convinced my fiance to do the Daria video with me, so it may be up this week.

PPS: I passed my library exam!

Thanks for the Feedback and the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

I would like to thank the few of you who gave me feedback on some questions I had yesterday. Only one of you gave advice about my itchy scalp problem. Shout out to Kimmykimmycocopuff (that is such a cute screenname!) So, I will most likely follow some of that advice and record the results here. We actually don’t have hard water around here, so I’ll be on the look out for that Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo at my local Sally Beauty Supply soon.

As for the video reviews, I actually have a nice handheld video camera. Unfortunately, I must have forgotten to pack the charge cord when I moved annnd my grandmother might have put it up in storage. So, for now, I may be testing the waters with videos with my laptop webcam.

I’m thinking about posting up my first video possibly tomorrow. I didn’t know what to talk about, but then it hit me. A few months back the fiance and I finished up my favorite animated TV series, Daria. This show was a huge part of my life when it aired and still is today. It was his first time seeing it. I thought it would be razor to do a retrospective video together (if I can get him to agree to it). What do you guys think? If not tomorrow, I think that will be the first video. I’m going to try to do a balance of both writing and film. This is going to be a fun experience.

In other news, I want to give a big thank you to those at For nominating me for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award. When I first started this blog, I never thought I would get the amount of recognition that I have been receiving. I really am very appreciative that all you readers out there want to see what I have to say.

Rules are:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.

2. Put the award logo on your blog.

3. Answer the ten questions sent to you.

4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.

5. Nominate ten blogs.

I am guessing that since this is a “sisterhood,” my choices should be ladies. So, here we go!

  1. What are your September favorites ? (books, music, products, etc.)  I never really did the whole “monthly favorite thing.” I just like what I like at any given time. But I can tell you about some wonderful products I bought this month! I recently discovered LUSH and have fallen in love! For those of you that don’t know what LUSH is, it’s a homemade cosmetics store that makes everything by hand and uses natural ingredients. So far I’ve gotten Grease Lightening (an acne fighter), Angels on Bare Skin (a facial cleanser), Eau Roma (facial toner), Imperials (facial moisturizer), and Happy Hippy (body wash). So far I have used Angels on Bare Skin, Grease Lightening, and Imperials. I can’t wait to try the rest!
  2. What is THE ONE BOOK everyone should read at least once in their lives? The Perks of Being A Wallflower. That book really helped me during a dark time.
  3. Where is your favourite place to read ? I used to love to read outside on my college campus. I guess I’m an outdoorsy reader. I like to read in coffee houses too.
  4. How did you come up with your blog name ? I actually took it from lyrics from the Everclear song “Rocket for the Girl.” I thought it summed up how my fiance makes me feel. Look it up and give it a listen! I also met the lead singer of Everclear back in June.
  5. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? I honestly don’t know.
  6. What’s your worst habit? Low self esteem
  7. Out of all the places around the world you’ve been to, what’s your favorite? I haven’t been to many places, so Disney World
  8. What are 3 essentials a blogger must have? Patience, good writing skills, and manners
  9. As a blogger, what do you think we can contribute to the community? A different perspective.
  10. Best comment on your blog so far. I’ll have to comb through them and get back to you on that.

I nominate:

My questions:

  1. What was the first book you ever found yourself attached to?
  2. What was the first television show you ever found yourself attached to?
  3. Describe an embarrassing moment.
  4. Describe an event that actually scared you.
  5. What movie can you just not watch? Why?
  6. If you could date a fictional character who would it be?
  7. If you could create your own perfect partner, what traits would you give him?
  8. Worst date moment.
  9. What was your first concert?
  10. If you were granted three wishes by the Robin Williams genie, what would they be?

Book Review: They Don’t Wanna Wait (the stars of Dawson’s Creek)

If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, you would know that I LOVE Dawson’s Creek (second only to Daria). I was born in 1990, but I really should have been a teenager in the 90s if you judged by my interests. One weekend while I was visiting my parents, I had Dawson’s Creek on the brain and was cruising on Amazon. This was on my wishlist for a while and I noticed they discontinued the Kindle version, but the paperback edition was quite cheap. I also snagged a trilogy series that puts the Dawson’s Creek characters in a horror story, and I can’t wait to read them!

This book was written around the time that the third season was about to air. It contains bios of the main characters (hello, Joshua Jackson!), the creation of the show and its influence to pop culture, and has a lot of interesting information on creator, Kevin Williamson. I skipped the last couple of parts because it was basically a recap of the first two seasons and I’m in the middle of rewatching the series.

It was great to find out that Joshua Jackson is a Nirvana fan. (Me too!) But Mr. Williamson’s story was the most entertaining part for me. I never would have guessed that the teacher from Teaching Mrs. Tingle was actually based on a real life teacher of Williamson’s that constantly belittled his abilities. Teaching Mrs. Tingle is actually one of my favorite films, despite it being a box office bomb.

Now days Kevin Williamson is known for working on the Vampire Diaries, but before that and Dawson, he was the creator of the Scream movies. I also learned that he also wrote the script for the Halloween H20. It was really cool finding out all this information about one of my most beloved writers. Minus the Vampire Diaries, ugh.

I couldn’t give this book a star rating because it is not listed on Goodreads. But if you are a fan of Dawson’s Creek or Kevin Williamson, I highly recommend it. It’s really cool owning this little piece of the 90s.

I Promise I’m Not Dead and I’m Not For Sale

Heh, I hope you guys like the Stone Temple Pilots reference. I haven’t been blogging these past few days because I took some time off to dedicate to job hunting. I never heard from that company that wanted the second interview, so it is safe to assume that they went with someone else. Bummer.

So far, things are looking up a bit. I did manage to find a few jobs I was qualified for that are in my field. I just applied for them yesterday, so we’ll see. So far, the only one I’ve heard back for is only a part time gig that is a little far, so it may not be worth it. I’m still going to do the phone interview and see if full time is possible.

A few goodies I ordered should be here today, so reviews will be coming soon. I haven’t really tried out the new supplies I bought at Target yet because I haven’t had any reason to wear make up and it is really hot outside. But if you guys remember one of my previous posts, I discovered I had eczema and not rosacea. I’ll be trying out the new face wash, lotion, and ointment soon. My translucent powder and eye shadow primer are almost here and the foundation I picked out of the three is on its way!

I know it seems like I buy a lot of stuff for the sake of beauty, but I actually buy everything in a certain price range and make sure my bills are paid off first. But lately, I have been worried about our financial status. I’m still unemployed and my fiance is at a dead end job, However, he is getting tutoring for his GED and has been working very hard at it. And at least, I’m getting call backs, right?

Despite all that, I still find myself getting depressed at times. I really hope we can get at a better place soon. Especially because my fiance’s dad just informed us that their rent house will be available in a month. His current tenants are moving out. He said he would even lower the price for us (me. my fiance, and his brother). If I can get a job soon, MAYBE we could do it. But right now, it’s just not feasible.

Last night was wonderful though. My fiance and I stayed up and watched a couple of hours worth of Daria. We’re almost done with the series and it’s great to share something that is so near and dear to me with him. We laughed at my hero’s sarcastic wit and cuddled. That show will forever be in my heart as a childhood through adult relic.

Can’t wait to start reviewing again.

Job Interview #2 and the e.l.f. Mist and Set Spray Review

Today, I had another job interview and it went really well. I was told upon leaving that I was wanted for a second interview. The hiring manager said that if I didn’t hear from them in the late afternoon, then I would hear from them by morning. Well, no call today. Better keep my ringer on tonight!

Of course, I had to make myself all pretty and apply make up. I really hate the foundation I use now, which is funny because I use to love it. But ever since I noticed the redness in one side of my face, it just doesn’t cover well. I also miss powder foundations. I switched from Bare Minerals to e.l.f.’s flawless liquid foundation (what I’m currently using) because I heard from a make up artist friend of mine that it (Bare Minerals) wasn’t good for your skin.

But the powders made my face look so good! I had tried other powder foundations after that, but the coverage was always horrible. Luckily, I ordered some powder foundation samples from a vegan cosmetics maker on Etsy. I can’t wait to review them!

Until then, I have to use up my e.l.f flawless liquid foundation and I also had the chance to properly use my new e.l.f. Mist and Set Spray. This time I sprayed it with the proper distance from my face and it kept my make up fairly fresh. The biggest problem is with my eye make up. It never wants to stay on my face! I ordered a vegan eye shadow primer from the same Etsy store as the foundation, so hopefully that will make my eye shadow stay. But I’ll still have the eye liner to deal with. It didn’t hold up well today. Anyone have any tips?

As for the Mist and Set, it does a good enough job. My only concern with it is that it’s a small bottle. However, the price is right at $3. However, I did mention in another post that I bought another bottle of rose water that can serve multiple purposes. When I run out of Mist and Set, I am going to try it out as a make up setter. It’s already going to get a rave review on being a toner alone! That stuff is razor!

Aside from all that, after the interview the fiance and I went out to eat. We were all giggly in the parking lot and flirty with each other. It felt so great. Which was good because the food was lousy. I felt so bad because I suggested the restaurant! But all was well because we came home and watched Daria and flirted with each other until he had to go to work.

I think that’s what we need to do. Try as hard as we can to make time for each other alone. We go out friends a lot and it can be difficult. We need the time to talk seriously, flirt, and just be goofy. I think I’ll ask him if he wants to watch the Last Unicorn tonight.

A Thrift Store Adventure With Some Reviews Thrown In

Yesterday, the fiance and I decided to go on a one-on-one date. This is something we hadn’t done in a good while. We’ve recently been invited on many double and triple dates with our friends, but sometimes it’s just nice to go out just the two of us. However, this date turned out to be a real drag.

I spent a lot of time in the bathroom trying to make myself look razor (it’s my slang for cool, but I could substitute it for beautiful too). I chose a little black and grey striped dress that stops just past my knees. It’s a little flirty without being revealing. My floral Doc Martens really paired well with the dress

I did something a little different with my eye make-up. I applied the usual mascara with black eyeliner, only this eyeliner had a little glitter in it. I don’t wear it often, but I busted out my silver eye shadow pen from e.l.f. I have to say the results looked pretty razor.

Just as I was about to try out my new bottle of e.l.f.’s mist and set spray, he poked his head into the bathroom and said my eyes looked sexy. I smiled somewhat, usually I would be thrilled with the compliment, but lately the passion in our relationship has fizzled out a bit. I was hoping that this may lead to some cuddles later.

The e.l.f. mist and set spray set is supposed to lock and seal in your make up for the day, but of course I messed it up on my first attempt. I sprayed it way too close to my face and ended up messing up my eyes. Needless to say, I had to redo it. I’ll write a more in depth review on it when I get it right.

I don’t know for sure, but I think most guys may hate it when we wear lipstick. I know my fiance hates it when I make his lips sticky when we kiss. As I was looking in the mirror, I realized I didn’t want to put any color on my lips. My natural lip color would go well with what I did with my make up. Of course, I would need to keep my lips moisturized and nice and glossy.

Recently, I purchased a vegan lip balm from an Etsy shop. I bought it in the flavor “Rose Candy” and I love it! It smells wonderful, feels great, and makes my natural lip shade glossy. Here’s a link to it:Rose Candy Lip Balm. I really want to try the Whiskey Sugar and Whiskey Honey ones next. I think my fiance would really like those.

Once I was all set, we went to our nearest Goodwill store. I love thrift store shopping! You would be amazed at what you could find there. There wasn’t much on clothes there. I only managed to find one skirt. It’s black with lots of white circles stitched in. I liked it. It was very different.

The real deals I found were in the CDs and DVDs. I managed to find:

I have been itching to get the Reality Bites soundtrack. I love the grunge and alternative era of the nineties, Ethan Hawke, and Winona Ryder. I owe tons of Ethan Hawke films and his novels. He’s my biggest actor crush next to Joshua Jackson (Pacey of Dawson’s Creek). Ethan even sings on the soundtrack!

I now owe the movie. I loved it. I want to read the book, but haven’t gotten it yet.

My fiance’s never seen it. So, I’ll introduce it to him once we finish Daria. Can you believe he had never seen Daria? That was a staple of my childhood.

But alas, most of our date consisted of us being separated to look for own items. I was under the impression we were going to do more, but he didn’t want to go to dinner. If I knew we were only going to spend a couple of hours at a thrift store, I probably wouldn’t have gotten all made up because of the hot sun.

Lately, there seems to be no romance and he seems so disinterested in me. I hate to say it but I even hiked up my dress while we were watching Empire Records. Just to get a little attention. Yeah, I felt like Cory.

What Makes A Man (Originally Posted August 21, 2013)

I wanted to post this last night but I found myself being tired and half-sleep. Oh, and sorry if some people may be annoyed at my recent influx of Daria posts. Can’t help it, it’s my favorite show.

Anyway, last night I found myself gushing to a new friend I’ve made about my boyfriend. Later, the little ugly voice that everyone has in their heads, decided to make it known to me that I don’t really deserve him.

I think it’s a mixture of different things. I am starting graduate school tomorrow, I had an embarrassing panic attack at his house Monday, and now I have a huge zit on my nose. I know it’s also my physical condition as well, but that’s a given. I know that my CP doesn’t affect me as a person, but some days are always going to be harder than others. Sometimes, it’s going to get me down, it’s human nature.

I did some deep thinking last night and I’ve come to realize that I think I don’t deserve him is because I think of him so highly. I look back at all my exes and I see them as little boys and when I think of my current man, well I see a man. Because of this, I have a fear of being taken away from him if I don’t succeed.

My family may disagree with me because he only has a part time job and no high school education. But that doesn’t make a man. Success doesn’t make a man. Sure, a man should be able to provide, but I have faith in him that he will get there. But there are other things that make a real man.

Things like kindness, honesty, and loyalty. Trust me, I never got all of these things with my exes. And for one ex in particular, I never got any. But my current has all of these and more, I can’t help but sometimes think I’m unworthy. I know he’s no where near perfect, but he’s definitely no boy. Man-child, at times though. But hey, sometimes that’s needed.

Everyone feels unworthy at times and it may be worse for others that have a problem like me. But at the end of the day if it’s over a relationship thing like this, you have to remember they chose you.

I will close with some Daria quotes I think cover my situation. Daria is my hero.
