Where Have I Been: Alterna-Nerd

nerd1c

Hey everyone! I know I didn’t keep my promise about “being back” and I’m sorry for that. But I just didn’t have much to write about.  Basically, my life has been looking for work and getting constantly rejected. You can probably imagine how that can take a toll on a person. However, recently I have taken my life into my own hands and have something to write about.

I love subscription boxes. I get an Owlcrate regularly because I love to read. I used to get a 90s Pop Box for my love of 90s pop culture, but they closed down. So, I decided to combine these two loves and create my own subscription box.

I’m hoping this will catch on and supply me with the income that I need, as well as something I would enjoy doing for a living.

The box is called Alterna-Nerd and we already have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/90sbooknerds/

The Kickstarter will hopefully be up soon, so please keep an eye out for that.

Now, let me tell you about the first box.

The first box will include:
A novel set in the 90s with a grungy feel
An item inspired by A Nightmare on Elm Street (ties in with novel)
Grunge buttons
A 90s themed tote bag
A nostalgic 90s candy
An item inspired by the film Natural Born Killers (also ties in with novel)
If you are at all interested in this, please like the Facebook page and feel free to contact me about whatever. Talk to you guys soon!

I Promise I’m Not Dead and I’m Not For Sale

enhanced-25858-1433883767-2

Heh, I hope you guys like the Stone Temple Pilots reference. I haven’t been blogging these past few days because I took some time off to dedicate to job hunting. I never heard from that company that wanted the second interview, so it is safe to assume that they went with someone else. Bummer.

So far, things are looking up a bit. I did manage to find a few jobs I was qualified for that are in my field. I just applied for them yesterday, so we’ll see. So far, the only one I’ve heard back for is only a part time gig that is a little far, so it may not be worth it. I’m still going to do the phone interview and see if full time is possible.

A few goodies I ordered should be here today, so reviews will be coming soon. I haven’t really tried out the new supplies I bought at Target yet because I haven’t had any reason to wear make up and it is really hot outside. But if you guys remember one of my previous posts, I discovered I had eczema and not rosacea. I’ll be trying out the new face wash, lotion, and ointment soon. My translucent powder and eye shadow primer are almost here and the foundation I picked out of the three is on its way!

I know it seems like I buy a lot of stuff for the sake of beauty, but I actually buy everything in a certain price range and make sure my bills are paid off first. But lately, I have been worried about our financial status. I’m still unemployed and my fiance is at a dead end job, However, he is getting tutoring for his GED and has been working very hard at it. And at least, I’m getting call backs, right?

Despite all that, I still find myself getting depressed at times. I really hope we can get at a better place soon. Especially because my fiance’s dad just informed us that their rent house will be available in a month. His current tenants are moving out. He said he would even lower the price for us (me. my fiance, and his brother). If I can get a job soon, MAYBE we could do it. But right now, it’s just not feasible.

Last night was wonderful though. My fiance and I stayed up and watched a couple of hours worth of Daria. We’re almost done with the series and it’s great to share something that is so near and dear to me with him. We laughed at my hero’s sarcastic wit and cuddled. That show will forever be in my heart as a childhood through adult relic.

Can’t wait to start reviewing again.

A Thrift Store Adventure With Some Reviews Thrown In

anigif_enhanced-2635-1436425010-2

Yesterday, the fiance and I decided to go on a one-on-one date. This is something we hadn’t done in a good while. We’ve recently been invited on many double and triple dates with our friends, but sometimes it’s just nice to go out just the two of us. However, this date turned out to be a real drag.

I spent a lot of time in the bathroom trying to make myself look razor (it’s my slang for cool, but I could substitute it for beautiful too). I chose a little black and grey striped dress that stops just past my knees. It’s a little flirty without being revealing. My floral Doc Martens really paired well with the dress

I did something a little different with my eye make-up. I applied the usual mascara with black eyeliner, only this eyeliner had a little glitter in it. I don’t wear it often, but I busted out my silver eye shadow pen from e.l.f. I have to say the results looked pretty razor.

Just as I was about to try out my new bottle of e.l.f.’s mist and set spray, he poked his head into the bathroom and said my eyes looked sexy. I smiled somewhat, usually I would be thrilled with the compliment, but lately the passion in our relationship has fizzled out a bit. I was hoping that this may lead to some cuddles later.

The e.l.f. mist and set spray set is supposed to lock and seal in your make up for the day, but of course I messed it up on my first attempt. I sprayed it way too close to my face and ended up messing up my eyes. Needless to say, I had to redo it. I’ll write a more in depth review on it when I get it right.

I don’t know for sure, but I think most guys may hate it when we wear lipstick. I know my fiance hates it when I make his lips sticky when we kiss. As I was looking in the mirror, I realized I didn’t want to put any color on my lips. My natural lip color would go well with what I did with my make up. Of course, I would need to keep my lips moisturized and nice and glossy.

Recently, I purchased a vegan lip balm from an Etsy shop. I bought it in the flavor “Rose Candy” and I love it! It smells wonderful, feels great, and makes my natural lip shade glossy. Here’s a link to it:Rose Candy Lip Balm. I really want to try the Whiskey Sugar and Whiskey Honey ones next. I think my fiance would really like those.

Once I was all set, we went to our nearest Goodwill store. I love thrift store shopping! You would be amazed at what you could find there. There wasn’t much on clothes there. I only managed to find one skirt. It’s black with lots of white circles stitched in. I liked it. It was very different.

The real deals I found were in the CDs and DVDs. I managed to find:

cluelesssound

realitybitessound

I have been itching to get the Reality Bites soundtrack. I love the grunge and alternative era of the nineties, Ethan Hawke, and Winona Ryder. I owe tons of Ethan Hawke films and his novels. He’s my biggest actor crush next to Joshua Jackson (Pacey of Dawson’s Creek). Ethan even sings on the soundtrack!

nickandnorah

I now owe the movie. I loved it. I want to read the book, but haven’t gotten it yet.

arresteddeveloseone

My fiance’s never seen it. So, I’ll introduce it to him once we finish Daria. Can you believe he had never seen Daria? That was a staple of my childhood.

But alas, most of our date consisted of us being separated to look for own items. I was under the impression we were going to do more, but he didn’t want to go to dinner. If I knew we were only going to spend a couple of hours at a thrift store, I probably wouldn’t have gotten all made up because of the hot sun.

Lately, there seems to be no romance and he seems so disinterested in me. I hate to say it but I even hiked up my dress while we were watching Empire Records. Just to get a little attention. Yeah, I felt like Cory.

The First Post Challenge

anigif_enhanced-buzz-23186-1432936457-6

So, this morning I was nominated by the lovely lady at A Caffeinated Blog to do the First Post Challenge! Thank you so much!

The rules:

  • link your first post
  • name the type of the post
  • explain why this was your first post (reason for writing)
  • nominate fellow bloggers to participate in the challenge

I am just going to copy and paste my first post.

It’s my first post, yay!  I guess I should start with what possessed me to do this and what this blog will be about and what not.  The other day I was sitting with my godmother at the kitchen table when she made the remark that I should make a blog.  Truth be told, I have made several blogs.  Just like millions of other people on this Earth, I never kept up with them.  Quite frankly though, a blog sounded like a good idea; it would keep me on top of my writing and I could shamelessly plug the articles for my job.  But what to write about?

Well, my favorite thing in the world is actually a person. Tee Hee. ^_^   I was also inspired by another blog that I follow called A Diary of Dating (http://howitwassupposedtobe.wordpress.com/).  This wonderfully written blog is about a young woman that has been chronicling her love/dating life in hopes of one day meeting her future husband.  So I got to thinking; Hmmm, I believe I already found mine.  I could write all about our exploits together up till our wedding day and then I could start a whole new blog about our married life and why I had to explain to his mom why I hit him with that frying pan.  I know what you’re thinking now.  Well, what if we break up?  I can always trash this blog and start a new one. ^-^

I’ll probably post up some other things about my life too.  These things will probably include my life as a college student since my graduation comes in May.  Then hopefully, I’ll get into grad school and I can write on that misery.  I write articles for a magazine in my spare time and I’ll post up links to that when I can.  I might even post up some of my own written works.

Now a little bit about myself, I am in a wheelchair with a condition known as Cerebral Palsy.  And yes, it does affect the brain.  But in my case, it only affects the part of my brain that enables me to walk on my own.  I’m a writer, so naturally I’m also English major.  I love 90s alternative and grunge.  I did steal the title of my blog from an Everclear song.

Well that’s all for now.  I know I should have probably started this blog with how I met my future hubby.  But that will come at a later date.  I need to get this blog looking better.  My man will also have to keep me in line on updating this thing as well.

This was actually re-posted from my original blogs on Blogger and Tumblr. But I just couldn’t get the readers I wanted on either site. So, I moved to WordPress and never looked back! It was basically just introducing myself and why I chose t start a blog.

Now I nominate:

Liebster Award

e280aaliebsteraward

Special thanks to TJS Old to New for nominating me for my second award!

  1. What drove you to the blogging scene and why?

Before I left my university, I wanted to be a writer. Having a blog was a way for me to get my thoughts out there to people and it turned out that it was something I really enjoyed. I don’t know if writing is the path for me, but I will continue to write on this blog. I have too many products and book to review and waaay too many thoughts on pop culture.

2. What is your greatest fear and why?

Chucky. That doll has just always freaked me out. Clowns too.

3. Do you have a favorite book? What is the name and type of book (horror, drama, etc.)?

I could never choose a single favorite book. There are just way too many books out there for me to find and devour. As for genres I tend to lean towards Y.A., horror, literary fiction, and biographies and memoirs.

4. Do you like fashion and why or why not?

Sure. I try to base my fashion choices on the 90s grunge and alternative scene because I grew up in it and idolized my older sister who dug it. I also like the sixties fashions because the 90s borrowed a lot from it.

5. If you had to choose one poet, who would it be and why?

Guess I’ll have to read more poetry.

6. If you had the chance to go any where in the world, where would it be?

Seattle and Portland were huge for grunge.

7. You are sitting in a bar… who is on your right and who is on your left and why?

My fiance and best friend because they are the only two I want to be with at a bar.

8. Pick one thing you own that you absolutely love and tell us why.

My Doc Martens because I always wanted a pair.

9. What is your favorite movie and why?

I could never choose a favorite movie. But I will tell you that I have a soft spot for 1998’s Disturbing Behavior because it was my first R rated movie in theaters, made me like the grunge look, had great music, and made me realize that I liked men.

10. What is your happiest memory?

That would have to be my first date with my fiance. We had Chinese food, saw Paranorman, and went to Books-a-Million where I bought Kevin Smith’s book. It was a good day.

I would normally nominate some bloggers now, but my back is killing me! So, whoever wants too join in feel free!

I Feel My Inner Grunge Goddess

enhanced-buzz-26417-1392911832-8

I’m sure you guys have noticed from my blog that I absolutely love the 90s decade and in particular the grunge and alternative scene. Well, I finally got my hands on something razor to go with my babydoll dresses and band shirts. But I’ll save that for the end of this entry.

I told you guys that the lady from FacenEarth was sending me a couple of free sample face scrubs. Well, that’s what I thought. But I actually got a whole box full of samples! Thank you! I gave a few to family, but I tried out the Grapefruit cleanser and it smells great! Unfortunately, it doesn’t keep my rosacea at bay like my normal cleanser does. I also tried out the rosehip moisturizer and my skin was absolutely glowing! So, this moisturizer may be a contender! I’ll see how it goes. I thought the smell was a little too strong, but my fiance loved it so much that he took a big wiff of my face. Which was weird.

Today, I went shopping and I bought the bio oil, so that review will be coming soon. I also bought a new bookshelf for my books. I also stocked up on fruits and healthy snacks, as I am trying to drop the weight. It’s hard to do that when my in-laws love their sugary snacks. So, I decided to combat the temptation with snacks of my own. I’ve already kicked soda out and I drink water with the occasional bit of lemon juice.

I know some of you have been looking forward to the rosewater toner review. It will take a bit longer because a sample toner was in the box and I am trying to use it up. But it won’t take long.

And…as I am listening to 90s alternative on Pandora, I’ll show you guys what I got.

doc martens

Black Floral Doc Martens!

Doc Martens usually run for $200 these days, but Journeys was having a sale and I got them for $50. These will be perfect for all my clothes and the fiance and I are discussing a possible grunge wedding theme. My grandma will love that. HA! I’m sorry the quality isn’t so good. I’ll take some more pictures soon.
